Trump’s most recent warning to introduce an additional full import duty on Chinese goods has been labeled a “typical example” of American hypocrisy, as stated by the Beijing administration.

A Commerce Ministry spokesperson additionally remarked that China could enact its own undisclosed “retaliatory steps” if the White House occupant follows through on his warning, noting that the country was “unafraid” of a looming commercial battle.

On Friday, Trump responded at the Chinese government’s action to strengthen its regulations for overseas sales of rare earth minerals, accusing China of “becoming very hostile” and attempting to hold the global community “hostage”.

Additionally, he threatened to cancel a scheduled meeting with China’s President Xi, which was expected to take place during a summit in South Korea before the month ends.

Trump’s comments on that day unsettled stock exchanges, with the S&P 500 dropping over two and a half percent, marking its biggest drop since April.

His comments reignited concerns of a trade conflict between the two economic giants.

This past spring, the respective governments had agreed to drop significant levies on each other’s products, which had created the possibility of trade halting between the economic powers.

This left, US tariffs on Chinese imports incurring an extra thirty percent tariff compared with the year’s onset, while items from the United States entering the country face a 10% tariff.

Beijing’s recent statements – issued by the Commerce Ministry in the form of formal replies to media inquiries – reflected rhetoric from the zenith of the latest commercial tensions.

The remarks condemned US export restrictions on electronic components while supporting the country’s own overseas sale regulations on key elements as “standard procedures” to protect state interests and that of every country.

Their representative said that for “a long time”, the America had “expanded the interpretation” of domestic safety, abused overseas sale restrictions and “adopted unfair treatments against the Chinese nation.

“Resorting to trade levy ultimatums is not the proper method to interact with China,” their representative commented.

“China’s position on a import duty dispute has always been unchanging: we are not seeking one, but we are fearless of one.”

The previous week, Beijing revealed it was tightening overseas sale regulations on rare earth minerals and additional substances essential to cutting-edge industry.

This was seen as a important measure, as the state handles about 90% of the planet’s critical minerals, which are used in goods such as renewable energy components and handheld devices.

The recent comments from both governments are being seen by analysts as a method of enhancing bargaining power prior to future trade talks.

It is unclear whether a talks between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, planned at a high-level meeting in Seoul in the coming weeks, will take place as planned.
